Thyroid Optimization

The thyroid is a very important gland that is part of the endocrine system.  It plays a major role in regulating the metabolism of all cells in the body.  The pituitary gland secretes TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) signaling the thyroid to secrete T4 (and some T3).  T4 is not the active thyroid hormone.  T4 must be converted to T3.  It is T3 that is biologically active and influences the activity of all cells and tissues of the body.

Many people, especially women, suffer from low thyroid.  Symptoms that may indicate this include:

  • Weakness
  • Coldness
  • Fatigue
  • Thin hair, skin, or nails
  • Weight gain
  • Increased body fat
  • Loss of energy and motivation
  • Loss of cognition or memory
  • Depression
  • Loss of well being

There are three main causes of low thyroid:

  1. Decreased production of T4 by the thyroid gland
  2. Decreased conversion of T4 to T3
  3. Receptor site resistance and less effectiveness at the receptor site

This diagnosis is frequently missed because often times only TSH is tested and if normal, it is said your thyroid is functioning fine.  Unfortunately this leads to many patients, especially women, not getting the optimal treatment they need to improve their symptoms.

Potential benefits of optimizing thyroid include:

  • Protection against Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive impairment, and fatigue
  • Regulation of body temperature, metabolism, brain function, energy, and fat burning
  • Increased metabolism and lipolysis which may lead to weight loss and lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels

There is mounting evidence that low thyroid is present in the majority of fatigued patients.  Fortunately, thyroid can be safely optimized, providing many benefits and leading to better quality of life.
